Presentation transcript:

THE MOON

1. came from Earth from a giant impact

2. Has a cratered surface, less gravity than Earth, and no atmosphere

3. Has the same side always faces Earth, b/c it rotates and revolves at the same speed.

4. Has HALF of itself always lit by the sun, even if we can’t see it.

5. has phases, b/c we see different amounts of that lit half as the angle b/t the moon, us, and the sun changes.

PHASES are the apparent changing of the moon due to its changing position relative to Earth and the sun.

The phases are: New waxing crescent 1st quarter waxing gibbous full waning gibbous 3rd quarter waning crescent New

6. It takes the moon 29.5 days to revolve around Earth, so the phases last 29.5 days

1st is the New moon (just 1 night)

Waxing Crescent (last about 1 week)

1st quarter (just 1 night)

Waxing Gibbous (last about 1 week)

Full Moon (just 1 night)

Waning Gibbous (last about 1 week)

3rd quarter (just 1 night)

Waning crescent (last about 1 week)

Then its back to New moon and it starts all over the next month

LET’S REVIEW!!!!

Describe the current theory for the origin of Earth’s moon. A Mar’s sized object hit the Earth when it was still forming, knocking a chunk off into space.

What causes the phases of Earth’s moon? The relative positions of the Earth, Moon, and Sun, changing the amount of the sunlit side of the moon we see from Earth.

How long does it take the moon to go through its phases? 29.5 days– amount a month

Can you name all the phases in order???? New, waxing crescent, 1st quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, 3rd quarter, waning crescent
