Making a Law Simulation Grade 11 Canadian Law Ms. Boylan

Step 1: Creating the Parties The class will be organized into groups based on political parties. Your group will create your own party name and ideals for your party Create your party name and party ideals now

Step 1: Creating the Parties We need a speaker to guide the law making process. SPEAKER(S)

Step 2: Deciding the Issue Now that you’re divided into your respective groups/parties, we need to decide on an issue to attempt to turn into a law… Some Examples include: Legalizing prostitution Legalizing marijuana Physician assisted suicide Other: ___________

Step 3: Framing the Bill Now that we’ve decided on the issue, let’s frame it as a bill that can be debated… Example: We as a house move that prostitution be legalized in Canada for the safety of sex trade workers and the regulation of a dangerous occupation. Class Example: _____We as a house move that payment for services from sex trade workers should be legalized and protected by the law in order to assist with safety and provide employment ___________________________

First Reading The bill will now be read and circulated. During the first reading the bill is NOT DEBATED. Example: We as a house move that prostitution be legalized in Canada for the safety of sex trade workers and the regulation of a dangerous occupation. Class Example: ________________________________

Review and Consideration Now the bill will be reviewed and considered by each of the parties before the second reading. Take time to do this now… Example: We as a house move that prostitution be legalized in Canada for the safety of sex trade workers and the regulation of a dangerous occupation. Class Example: _______________________________

Second Reading Now the PRINCIPLE of the bill is debated. Is it a good or bad idea? Is it good policy? Is the idea behind it sound? Is it a workable solution to a problem? Class Example: _______________________

Committee Stage Once the bill has been agreed on it is sent to the committee stage for further input, amendments and consideration. We are not doing this for this simulation.

Third Reading The final draft of the bill will now be read. Bill is voted on Any changes or amendments will be debated and agreed upon. Once the final bill is agreed upon it is sent to the Senate for approval (federal) or to the Lieutenant- Governor for Royal Assent (provincial)

And that’s how you make a law! Finished! And that’s how you make a law!
