Welcome to British Science Week Monday 11th – Friday 15th March

Remember our aim for the week: The aim of British Science week is to inspire as many of you as possible to find something within the world of science that you enjoy and to find out about the many different career opportunities available within STEM for young women just like you!

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Inspiring females in Science Today’s scientist was able to change the career opportunities available to women with her courage in the face of discrimination This lady was the first ever female doctor to qualify in England! Her name is…… Elizabeth Garrett Anderson

Elizabeth Garrett Anderson (1836 – 1917) Key facts: Born in Whitechapel, London and was one of 12 children!! Was inspired to pursue a career in Medicine after meeting Dr Elizabeth Blackwell, the first female doctor to graduate in the United States

Why is Elizabeth Garrett Anderson inspiring? Despite a great desire to pursue a career as a doctor after meeting Elizabeth Blackwell, things were not easy for Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Despite having all the qualifications needed, she was rejected from all Medical schools and was forced to enrol as a nursing student Men also complained and had her banned from any classes she attended with them!!!!!!

In the face of this discrimination, Elizabeth continued to fight on and studied to become a doctor in Paris. Even though she was fully qualified, she was still rejected by the British Medical register on the grounds of her gender Instead of giving up, Elizabeth set-up a new hospital for women and continued to campaign for equal opportunities Eventually, in 1876, the ban was lifted!!!!!

Famous quote about Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Despite her husband being very supportive, Elizabeth received a lot of pressure from her family to stay at home and behave in the “traditional manner.” She said the following about this pressure: “When I felt rather overcome with my father’s opposition, I said as firmly as I could, that I must have this or something else, that I could not live without some real work.”

Pursuing a career in STEM:

Puzzle number 2 – what’s his name?! Did you solve it?! I am a son of a chemist and a mathematician. People called me Iron59. What's my name?

What’s his name? I am a son of a chemist and a mathematician. People called me Iron59. What's my name? Solution: Felix Fe – symbol for iron LIX = 59 in Roman numerals

but nobody has ever seen it, Puzzle number 3 – What am I?! Many have heard it, but nobody has ever seen it, and it will not speak back until spoken to. What is it?
