Quotes -“Occasionally a of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out ghastly creak, and comes to rest…(Fitzgerald)” -“...ash-gray man swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight (Fitzgerald)” -“But above the gray land and spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it , you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of doctor T.J. Eckleburg. (Fitzgerald)”

“Occasionally a of gray cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out ghastly creak, and comes to rest…(Fitzgerald)” The occasional gray train car represents a beast carrying poor souls back from a feeling of hope to the gates of hell. Then returning them to a feeling of hope when they are boarding the train to leave the Valley of Ashes. 1. The color relates to the Train car itself, being how its bland and represents despair. 2.The color may mostly relate to Nick because he is stuck in between Tom, Daisy, and Gatsby as the people boarding and getting off the train are stuck in between happiness and despair. 3.The color symbolizes despair and the non existence of obtained dreams. Jerell Martin

“...ash-gray man swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud, which screens their obscure operations from your sight (Fitzgerald)” What does the color relate to? Words such as “ghastly” and “ash-gray” compares to the local ghosts that live in the Valley What character does the color relate to? The color gray relates to the people living in “the Valley” What is the symbolic meaning of the color in the scene? The symbolic meaning of the color is referring to the people who live in the valley. From the ash, they appear to be gray giving them a ghostly appearance. Chyna Cox

“But above the gray land and spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it , you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of doctor T.J. Eckleburg. (Fitzgerald)” 1. The color gray relates to dearness and despair. The object relates to "dust". 2. The color gray relates to desperate Daisy. 3. The symbolic meaning of the color gray in the scene is how the dust drifts endlessly. Daisy did the same, "There was a quality of nervous despair in Daisy's letters" Robin Torchon

Through the entire novel so far, what is one central meaning of the color? One central meaning of the color gray is the idea that the wealthy people ignore the people of “the Valley”. Again words such as “ghastly” and “ash-gray” are referring to the people as ghostly because they are covered in ash. Nick’s description of these people is his way of defending himself to make himself not seem as if he's responsible for these people being stuck in the situations they’re in.

Which of the following characters is symbolically represented by your color. Explain. We believe that Nick is most symbolically represented by the color gray. The color gray represents somewhat a sense of not having a place, or displacement and despair. It relates to Nick due to him being torn between three people he cares about being Gatsby which he believes to be the perfect guy, and family being Daisy his cousin and her husband Tom. It compares to the color because he is lost and can’t decide between the two parties. Also similarities that he shares with the people stuck in the Valley of Ashes, stuck in between happiness in which life could be and lost dreams in which life actually is.
