Advanced google searching techniques By: Adam Piscitello

Parenthesis or (Nesting) Using parenthesis can help you narrow your search down. It clarifies relationships between items. For example: type in: (television or mass media) and women Google will search for “television and women” and “mass media” and women

Google as a Dictionary Google will define any word that you type in. To do so, all you have to do is type the word “define” before the word you want to be defined. As an example, type in: define human

Quotations Using quotations is a great way to search for EXACTLY what you typed in. If you type “chocolate chip cookies” in the search bar, you will not get anything other than searches that have the three words in that order. Therefore, you will only get recipes or whatever you need on chocolate chip cookies, not mint chocolate chip cookies or anything else.

SafeSearch You can put a filter on what comes up when searching for images. After searching, there is a button to the right of the screen that says, “SafeSearch” When this is activated, sexually explicit material will be filtered out. This is common to use in schools.

The Power of the “-” sign! To exclude a term from your search use a – sign! This will give you all of the results you want but without the word you don’t want. For example: if I type in “best smartphones –android” I will get results for what the best smartphone is with no reference to any androids!
