THE EMOTION AND MEMORY COMPONENTS OF THE LIMBIC SYSTEM Lab 12 THE EMOTION AND MEMORY COMPONENTS OF THE LIMBIC SYSTEM
emotional feelings and expression, includes: a) cortical part of emotion system : anterior cingulate gyrus medial prefrontal cortex orbitofrontal gyri b) amygdala (key integrator and “grader” of incoming sensory information c) ventral or limbic basal ganglia : ventral striatum (nucleus accumbens) ventral pallidum (output nucleus) d) dorsomedial nucleus of thalamus e) hypothalamus - nodal point in organizing visceral & somatic emotion responses. The emotions structures are connected by bundles of fibers that include: • the cingulum (cortico-cortical connections) • the ventral amygdalofugal path (VAPF) for input/output of the amygdala • the stria terminalis (for communication of the amygdala with the septal area and hypothalamus - the medial forebrain bundle (MFB), the multifunctional ascending and descending tract in the lateral hypothalamus
