Instrumental and Vocal Auditions

Welcome! This PowerPoint will lead you through some audition tips and tricks to help you be successful in auditioning for music excellence and/or triple threat program at Southport State high School.

3 What do you need to do? Successful audition is necessary to enter the music excellence and/or triple threat course Once entered, you must maintain a excellent effort rating and above a B for academic result Must be having lessons and/or be a part of an ensemble

What the audition looks like? Audition takes place in a small, sound-proof practice room in the music block Arrive 10 minutes early and you will have chance to warm up beforehand Perform to 2 music teachers Speakers and access to computer is available to play any backing tracks You may be asked questions about your tuition and/or ensemble participation

Instrumental Audition Requirements: 3 Instrumental Audition Requirements: 2 short pieces (no more than 1 min each) Show a variety of techniques e.g. a slow and a fast piece, a piece using legato and a piece using staccato Choose in consultation with your teacher 2 scales Be able to perform with different articulation

Instrumental audition: what we’re looking for Intonation Do you demonstrate staccato/legato if marked in your music? Are you playing in tune? Instrumental technique Timing Are you tonguing/ bowing/ plucking/ blowing/ buzzing correctly? Are you staying in time and you playing the correct rhythm of the chosen piece? Breathing (wind instruments) Fluency Do you know how to breath correctly? Do you have control over your breath? Do you have a well- supported sound? Do you play with fluency or do you stop and start again? Tone Do you have a focused tone or a weak sound? Musical terms? Do you know what all the terms mean on your page? Articulation Posture Are you sitting/ standing correctly?

Vocal audition requirements 2 short song excerpts (no more than 1 min each) These songs should contrast e.g. a slow song and a fast or a musical theatre and an art music, a high piece and a lower piece Choose quality repertoire NOT difficult pop songs Choose songs that suit YOUR vocal ability, not just songs that you like to listen to Can perform with or without backing tracks Optional songs are on the website (Naughty and Consider Yourself)

Vocal audition: what we’re looking for Intonation Breathing Are you singing in tune? Do you know how to breath correctly? Do you have control over your breath? Do you have a well-supported sound? Timing Are you in time with the music and singing the correct rhythm of the chosen song? Memorization Stylistic vocal technique Do you know the words? Are you singing the song in an appropriate way for the specific song? Face Does your face tell the story?
