What is imperialism?

What is imperialism?

Imperialism: Domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region Forms: Colony  considered to be part of the “mother country” – government is controlled by an outside power Protectorate  local rulers stay in place but follow advice of European advisers Sphere of influence  an outside power claims exclusive trading privileges

Causes: “The makers of cotton and iron goods have been very much interested in imperialism. This … has been greatly strengthened by the demand of giant industries for colonial raw materials … Shipowners demanding coaling stations for their vessels and naval bases for protection.” - Parker T. Moon, Imperialism and Politics

Causes:

Causes: “American factories are making more than the American people can use; American soil is producing more than they can consume. Fate has written our policy for us; the trade of the world must and shall be ours … We will establish trading posts throughout the world as distributing points of American products. We will cover the ocean with our merchant marines. We will build a navy to the measure of our greatness…” - American Senator A. J. Beveridge (1898)

Causes: “ … none of the colonial undertakings was motivated by the quest for … profits; they all originated in political ambitions … the nations’ will to power … glory or national greatness.” - Raymond Aron, The Century of Total War

Causes: “I contend that we [Britons] are the finest race in the world, and the more of the world we inhabit, the better it is for the human race … It is our duty to seize every opportunity of acquiring more territory and we should keep this one idea steadily before our eyes that more territory simply means more of the Anglo-Saxon race, more of the best, the most human, most honourable race the world has ever seen.” - Cecil Rhodes, Confessions of Faith

Causes: “Take up the white man’s burden Send forth the best ye breed Go bind your sons to exile To serve your captives’ need To wait, in heavy harness, On fluttered folk and wild Your new caught, sullen peoples, Half-devil and half-child” - Rudyard Kipling, The White Man’s Burden (Poem)

Causes: “We could not leave them to themselves. They were unfit for self-government. There was nothing left for us to do but take them over. Then we would be able to educate the Filipinos. We could uplift and civilize and Christianize them…” - American President William McKinley (explaining why the U.S. took over the Philippines)

Effects:

Effects:

Effects: “Colonialism’s greatest misdeed was to have tried to strip us of our responsibility in conducting our own affairs and convince us that our civilization was nothing less than savagery, thus giving us complexes which led to our being branded as irresponsible and lacking in self-confidence.” - Sekou Toure, African nationalist

Effects:

Effects: “When the whites came to our country, we had the land and they had the Bible; now we have the Bible and they have the land.” - African proverb
