QUESTIONS What percentage of our food is carbohydrates? What special pigment can be found in chloroplasts that absorbs sunlight? Why does the chloroplast need to split water molecules? What does the process of photosynthesis make? Name one food that gives us starch. What do our bodies break down starch into?

CELLULAR RESPIRATION Occurs in the mitochondria. Releases energy. How PLANT and ANIMAL cells make energy. REACTANTS: Glucose, 6O2 PRODUCTS: ATP, 6CO2,6H2O

PHOTOSYNTHESIS Occurs in the chloroplast. Absorbs energy. How PLANTS make food. The basis of all other food. REACTANTS: 6H2O, 6CO2, Sunlight PRODUCTS: Glucose, 6O2

PHOTOSYNTHESIS V. CELLULAR RESPIRATION Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are DEPENDENT on each other. They are connected; one cannot operate without the other.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS V. CELLULAR RESPIRATION Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration are OPPOSITES of each other. The reactants of photosynthesis are the products of cellular respiration (vice versa).

PHOTOSYNTHESIS V. CELLULAR RESPIRATION Photosynthesis ABSORBS energy. Cellular respiration RELEASES energy.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS V. CELLULAR RESPIRATION Plant cells use BOTH cellular respiration and photosynthesis. They can power their own cellular respiration through the sugar they make during photosynthesis. Animal cells ONLY do cellular respiration. Animals must consume other organisms to get the sugars needed to power cellular respiration.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION SIMULATION In this lab, you are going to model the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration within a plant cell. JOBS Transport Technician Chloroplast Mitochondria Director

PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION SIMULATION Lab Handout Read Aloud MATERIALS: 6 Carbon Atoms, 12 Hydrogen Atoms, 18 Oxygen Atoms, Sunlight Token, ATP Token, Lab Instructions, and Poster Board Follow the steps EXACTLY. When it says to “move molecules,” slide them across the poster board to the new location. Don’t be particular about your piles, BUT make sure that you organize your atoms into distinct piles to represent molecules.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION SIMULATION Once you have completed the simulation TWICE, let the teacher know so that you can get your lab worksheet. Follow the directions on the worksheet to complete the lab. After you have finished the handout, complete the Menu activity found on the back of the lab instructions. Write your answers on the back of your lab worksheet.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND CELLULAR RESPIRATION SIMULATION Voice Level 2 (Group/Partner Talk) H Ask three then me! A Follow the directions on the lab instructions to complete the simulation. Then, complete the lab worksheet and the menu activity. M None, Remain seated and on task. P Looks like students collaborating and documenting their learning. Sounds like conversations are on task and students are using accountable talk. S Success!
