Executive Functioning Introduction and Checklist

Does this sound familiar? Your mom asks you to clean your room. You go to your room and it’s a MESS. You have no idea where to start. This is too overwhelming!! What does “clean” even mean?! You: Pick a fight with your sister so that your mom is distracted from her impossible request Get distracted by the awesome thing under Pile 34 and start playing with it Play on the computer for awhile, because it’s a lot easier Actually clean your whole room

What is Executive Functioning? EF Skills are “the brain-based skills used to help a person perform tasks.” (Smart but Scattered, 2009) It’s like the conductor (EF) leading an orchestra (our brain and body): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLXwpGCn2KQ (watch for 2 minutes)

What areas does EF Affect?

How are my ef skills? You will now fill out an Executive Functioning Self-Check We can read through the choices together. Remember, we are thinking of how HARD it is for you to do these things, not how good you are at them. Your choices are sometimes hard, always hard, or never hard. When we are done, you will glue/tape this into your notebook on the next available page.

How can I improve My EF skills? Learn skills! New strategies to avoid our problem areas As we learn new skills, our brain adapts and develops Use tools! Phones with reminder alarms Planners Timers Checklists
