What Is the Difference between Persuasive Writing and Writing Argument? Persuasive - In a persuasive essay, you can select the most favorable evidence, appeal to emotions, and use style to persuade your readers. Your single purpose is to be convincing . The same might be said of propaganda and advertising. Argument, on the other hand, is mainly about logical appeals and involves claims, evidence, warrants, backing, and rebuttals, Argument is at the heart of critical thinking; it is the kind of writing students need to know for success in college and in life. ELA Argument Argument- Making a claim and support it using logic. Claim/Thesis- The position that you are trying to get your readers to accept. Evidence- Facts that support your claim Bridge/Warrant- Statement that explains how the evidence supports and connects to the claim. Counterargument/Rebuttal/Counterclaim- Challenging the argument by addressing the position of someone who may not agree with the argument. Turn-back/refutation- Demonstrating why the counterargument is wrong. Reasoning – A justification that links the claim & evidence. The statement would actually work well as a thesis for an explanatory response.
