Absolute Values The absolute value of a number is its distance from zero on the number line. y = 3 or y = -3 To solve an equation of the form , where b is a positive number, solve the disjunction A = b or A = -b.

Example 1 Solve . x - 3 = 2 or x – 3 = -2 +3 +3 +3 +3 x = 5 x = 1 +3 +3 +3 +3 x = 5 x = 1 The solution set is {1,5}.

Example 2 Solve . 2x – 1 = 3 or 2x – 1 = -3 +1 +1 +1 +1 2x = 4 2x = -2 +1 +1 +1 +1 2x = 4 2x = -2 x = 2 x = -1 The solution set is {-1,2}.
