Presentation transcript:

The poem Remembrance is an extract of Emily and Anne Bronte’s Gondal saga. A male character, known as Julius Brenzaida, the emperor of the kingdom of Gondal, dies at the battlefield and the poem Remembrance is the song sung by his wife Augusta, fifteen years after his death to affirm her deep love.  Division of sonnets: 1-126 – the poet speaks to a young man, often referred to as “Fair Youth”. 127-154 – the poet speaks to the Dark Lady. Critics have suggested that the relationship between Shakespeare and the young man was more than platonic, perhaps sexual. In this series of sonnets Shakespeare explores the significance of death. In Sonnet 73, Shakespeare laments the end of youthful passion and desires, and possibly gives a warning to the young man he is writing to. The young man could have been one of the two following men: William Herbert – The Earl of Pembroke; Henry Wriothesley – The Earl of Southampton. Both were patrons of Shakespeare’s plays and poems and would have enjoyed a close relationship with him. Either way, Shakespeare is writing about a very profound relationship. In Sonnet 20, Shakespeare actually laments the fact the young man is not a woman – this tells us that their relationship was important to him, and maybe he did want more than friendship.
