化工学院第七届国际交流月系列讲座 邀请人:王文俊 化学工程与生物工程学院 化学工程联合国家重点实验室(浙江大学) Prof. Zhen-Gang Wang Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering California Institute of Technology Dr. Zhen-Gang Wang is Lawrence A. Hanson Jr. Professor of Chemical Engineering at California Institute of Technology. He received Ph.D. from University of Chicago in 1987. His research interests lie in structures, phase transitions and dynamics in complex fluids, including polymers, liquid-crystals, gels and soft glasses; surfaces and interfaces; charged systems; nucleation; nonlinear rheology of entangled polymers and associating polymers; DNA and membrane biophysics. He has received numerous awards, including Richard P. Feynman Prize for Excellence in Teaching (CALTECH) in 2008, and has published over 140 refereed articles. He was elected as a fellow of the American Physical Society in 2001. Lecture 1: June 7rd, 2016 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Room 602 - Building 7 Electrostatics beyond Poisson-Boltzmann: Effects of Self-Energy Ions are essential in physical chemistry, colloidal science, electrochemistry, biology and many other areas of science and engineering. While their role is commonly described in terms of screening and translational entropy, many phenomena, ranging from some classical experimental observations made many decades ago to some new systems of current interest, cannot be explained, even qualitatively, by these concepts. A key effect that is often ignored or inadequately treated in the main literature on electrolytes and polyelectrolytes is the self-energy of the ions. In this talk, I will discuss several self-energy effects in macromolecular and interfacial systems. First, we show that the preferential solvation energy of the ions provides a significant driving force for phase separation. This concept is used to develop a theory to explain the dramatic shift in the order-disorder transition temperature in PEO-PS diblock copolymers upon the addition of salt. Second, we show that the dielectric contrast between the polymer backbone and the solvent significantly affects the conformation and charge condensation in dilute polyelectrolyte solutions. Third, we show that the image force has qualitative effects on the double layer structure and forces, such as like charge attraction and charge inversion. Finally we present a simple theory for treating charge correlation effects in polyelectrolyte solutions that self-consistently account for the conformation changes of the polyelectrolyte chains. Lecture 2: June 8th, 2016 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Room 602 - Building 7 On Writing Scientific Papers Effective communication is essential in today’s global scientific enterprise. In particular, dissemination of research results through the professional journals is crucial for the success of any researchers. Yet few of us have received specific training in how to write good scientific papers. In this talk, I will share my thoughts on this subject. I will discuss the general guidelines for effective, clear and accurate writing. I will then discuss the specifics in writing each of the main sections of a typical article: Introduction, Methodology/Experimental/Model/Theory, Results and Discussion, and Conclusions. I will use real examples to illustrate the main points and will provide some useful specific tips. 邀请人:王文俊 化学工程与生物工程学院 化学工程联合国家重点实验室(浙江大学)
