Introduction to Sports Medicine I relate these 2 short chapters to athletes seeing these professionals in a school or clinical setting.

Bellwork Write down what you believe is the definition of what sports medicine is. Discuss with your table partners and note any differences. Be prepared to share as a table.

Objectives Students will be able to define sports medicine, notable members of the sports medicine team, the role of the athletic trainer in the team and personal characteristics that are essential for the ATC

What is sports medicine? The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention & treatment of injuries that occur to athletes & the active population Not just athletes. People who can be active can see a sports medicine team member. This includes your mom who gardens, the weekend warrior brother, or the dad who works on cars.

Multiple Disciplines Anatomy Physiology Strength Training Psychology Nutrition Ppl in sports medicine field must know a little about all of these fields.

Personal Characteristics People Skills Communication Skills Leadership Skills Compassion Good Listening Skills Ability to follow directions Healthy Body Sincere Desire to Learn Positive Attitude Ppl Skills – few jobs where you will not work with others. One of the most desired aspects that employers want…ability to work with others in a team. Communication – 2 way street, listen to Dr. orders and be able to relay back to patient in terms they know. Leadership – in emergency situation, you might have to take over telling others what to do…e.g. Pt @ person & tell them to call 911, another person controls the crowd, etc. Compassion – You are dealing with sick and hurt ppl, show sensitivity, but don’t let them feel sorry for themselves. Good Listening Skills- listen to your patients or athletes, 99% of the time they will be able to lead you to the diagnosis if you listen to what they tell you. Ability to follow directions-important to do what Dr. may want you to do. If not, you could do further harm to patient. Thus, u get sued. Healthy Body – don’t need to be able to run marathons, but you should be able to do the work needed for your field. For example, Dr.’s may have to be on their feet 7 hrs a day when performing surgery. Sincere Desire to Learn – techniques and theories are always changing. Must be able to keep up with new science. Positive Attitude – Patients can read when you are upset. If YOU keep a positive attitude, that might give them the little ray of hope they need.

Class Assignment Write down as many career opportunities in the sports medicine field that you can think of that would be under the sports medicine umbrella.

Career Opportunities Physicians Physical Therapists Nutritionists Massage Therapists ATHLETIC TRAINERS FITNESS INSTRUCTORS Athletic Trainers and Fitness Instructors are what we will focus on in this class.

What is Athletic Training? A division of sports medicine that focuses on the care and prevention of athletic injuries.

The Sports Medicine Team A team that works together & support the team captain Team is created for the athlete/patient Consists of 7 members

Team Physician TEAM CAPTAIN Coordinates the rest of the team Judges what is best for the athlete/patient No other team medical personnel may overrule the physician Usually a orthopedic surgeon

Athletic Trainer Role is to be a communication link between the rest of the team Assumes the duties of team organization if no team physician is present

The Coach Should assume ATC responsibilities if there is not one Should keep consent forms, health insurance, and other necessary forms to participate Must be first aid and CPR trained Responsible for helping to prevent further injury to a player by not allowing them to play when they are hurt.

The Athlete The most important player on the team (MVP) Must follow instructions provided by the physician, ATC, or coach Must communicate conditions to ATC or MD Without this person, there is no team. They ultimately will determine if the team fails or succeeds. They must do what they are told.

The Athlete’s Parents Should be informed on injuries when they occur (if a minor) Main role is to be a support system for the athlete Take child to therapy appointments, etc.

School Administration Ensure the safety of student-athletes This should be the highest priority

Community Health Facilities Provide services such as rehabilitation, drug testing, and education

Being a member of the team Should know when to punt If you feel skills are required outside of your training, seek another’s expertise Class assignment – Career Research Students do a career research on certain members of the Sports med team, orthopedic MD and Athletic Trainer. Research following items: Job Duties Educational/Training requirements Potential Employers (who do they work for) Job Settings (where do they work) Salary (starting & average)
