Reteach concepts from Unit 1 Protons Identify Reteach concepts from Unit 1

Protons If you need to identify an element, all you need to know is how many protons it has, everything else in question is a distractor How do you know how many protons: Count positive charges Atomic number Number of electrons in a neutral atom

Why are protons and electrons equal? Atoms are neutral, or have no charge, until a chemical reaction takes place On a test, the atoms are assumed to be neutral The positive charges must equal the negative charges, protons = electrons

What is more reactive? An atom with one valence electron or an atom with 4 valence electrons? One is easier to get rid of An atom with one valence electron or an atom with 8 valence electrons? Atoms with 8 are stable and not reactive

If you know the following: Can you identify this element ALWAYS? When you know the protons? When you know the electrons? When you know the electrons in a neutral atom? When you know the neutrons?
