Social Emotional Learning in Schools Where do we go from here? Brad Brown & Kim Beeson, PSESD

Frameworks and Climate MTSS stresses a continuum of interventions promoting development and preventing problems responding to problems as early-after-onset as feasible (3) treating severe, pervasive, and chronic problems. But PBIS Uses positive reinforcement – stems form behaviorism with focus on teach, reinforce observable behaviors “RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, SAFE” Incentives: ‘cougar cash’ focus on teachers doing minor disciplinary action within the classroom and referring major disc to office. So scenario: teacher consult on how to reinforce positive behavior – will do 5:1 etc. Counselor will ID, monitor behavior for patterns to learn function of behavior and intervene at that level. SEL: effective prevention programs promote effective social emotional skills – so Olweus, Good Behavior Game, 2nd Step et al. CASEL has 5 competencies and wa state has new benchmarks. Along with curricula is partnerships with CBOs for teir 2 and 3; SEL is build into the learning mission RJ originates from indigenious, first nations and is to create connections/relationships to align with community norms. Non punitive, non exclusionary. Includes meetings, circles and restorative conversations. Aks what happened who was impacted and how tomake things right.

Frameworks and Climate PBIS: Use Positive Reinforcement Restorative Practices: Support Social/Moral Development Tier 1: Create Safe and orderly learning environment Tier 2: monitor behavior and extrinsic rewards Tier 3: most intensive interventions Tier 1: Build relationship and community Tier 2: Repair harm Tier 3: Rebuild and Reintegrate PBIS 1 – whole school behavioral expectations 2 check in check out, team referrals 3 functional behavioral assessment, behavioral intervention plans RJ – leverage relationhsips to develop and demonstrate SEL and behavioral expectations 1 Classroom circles 2 conference or circle, restorative chat 3 reentry conference SEL 1 SEL curricula 2 Alternative to suspension, P/I, group work, screen for trauma… 3 BH counseling EQUITY LENS: Reflect role of systemic oppression. SEL: Skill Development and Support Tier 1: Social skill instruction and emotional support Tier 2: Self regulation, coping, connection to support systems Tier 3: Invest in safe connections and ongoing support

This OSPI benchmark work and is still under work- they are working on this as it is based out of CASEL (collabrative for academic social emotional learning - they have and active work group that came out House bill 58-83 in 2017-
