KILMER MIDDLE SCHOOL Family life education how to ACCESS THE FLE CURRICULUM THROUGH BLACKBOARD Set Up: Recommended that at least one administrator and one teacher from each grade level be in attendance; access to computers for parents to access and review lessons and media; all grades 6-8 FLE media are streamed except for the print material and media to support the special education modified curriculum for students with low incidence disabilities. Notes for each slide are intended to help guide this brief presentation to parents and is not required. Schools may make alterations as they feel appropriate. Administrators will want to be prepared to address questions about when FLE instruction is scheduled to occur. Presentation should take no more than 10 minutes. Note: Parents should already have access to their SIS accounts. If a parent does not have access they will need to sign up with FCPS. Slide #7 has directions for parents. Administrator should welcome parents and introduce staff

Family Life Education (FLE) K-12 Instructional Program Adheres to state guidelines and recommendations Includes two units of instruction at the Middle School level Emotional and Social Health (ESH) – Grades (6)7&8 Human Growth and Development (HGD) – Grades (6)7&8 Parents may opt their child out of all or any lessons in Emotional and Social Health and Human Growth and Development units of instruction. FCPS implements a K-12 FLE program that adheres to state and Virginia Department of Education requirements and guidelines. At grades 6, 7, and 8 there are two units of instruction that are designated as Family Life Education, Emotional and Social Health and Human Growth and Development. In grade 6, the emotional social health unit includes topics such as abuse, and community health care. (Note: There are no references to sexual orientation or gender identity in grade 6.) Grade 7 ESH topics include Middle School Changes which includes definitions for sexual orientation and gender identity, friendships, relationships, safety, self-image, and self-esteem. Grade 8 includes topics such as development & decision making, individual identity which includes definitions for sexual orientation and gender identity, relationships and conflict resolution, exploitation, and abuse. The human growth and development unit for grades 6, 7, and 8 include puberty, hygiene, reproductive systems (male and female), reproduction, sexually transmitted infections, refusal skills, and abstinence. Grade 8 includes one lesson on contraception. All human growth and development lessons are conducted in gender-separate classes. As required, parents may opt their child out of any single lesson or all lessons in FLE instruction, this includes both the ESH and HGD units.

Parent Access to FLE Program Materials Online in FCPS 24-7 (Blackboard) Parent View/My FCPS Parent Lessons and media with streaming rights Parents/guardians will need the new SIS account to access FCPS 24-7 School libraries Lessons, media, and print materials during regular school hours (please schedule with librarian) Fairfax County Regional Library in the City of Fairfax Lessons, but does not have media nor print materials There are three ways to access FLE lessons. All grade level lessons and media that FCPS has streaming rights for are available to parents in FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) under the Curriculum tab. We have computers set up for you and staff will assist you in accessing the materials. Accessing Blackboard requires a SIS account to log in. If you do not have a SIS account, we can assist you with that as well. All school libraries have the lessons and materials appropriate to their grade levels that you may access during the school day. We request that you schedule an appointment with the librarian to ensure materials are ready for your access and a space to access the materials is available. In addition, the Regional Library in the City of Fairfax has lessons, it does not have media or print materials. 9/2/2015
