Settling Western Lands Notes

Territory becomes government land… All 13 states had to approve the Articles of Confederation Some states did not approve the Articles until all states gave up there claim to western land. Land was turned over to the National government.

Land Ordinance of 1785 6 5 4 3 2 1 7 8 9 10 11 12 18 17 16 15 14 13 19 20 21 22 23 24 30 29 28 27 26 25 31 32 33 34 35 36 Land was divided up in to townships- 6 miles on each side. Land was divided so congress could sell it easily. 6 miles 6 miles

Northwest Ordinance of 1787 Guaranteed basic rights for settlers in the territory and banned slavery there. 3 step process for admitting new states: 1. Newly settles territory must appoint a governor, secretary, and 3 judges. 2. Once population hit 5,000 free adult males, they could elect a legislature. 3. Population 60,000: the territory could ask to be admitted as a state.
