Critical and Insightful Points of View Facet 4: Perspective Critical and Insightful Points of View

Structure Introduction Definition What Of It? The Power Of Perspective Advantages Disadvantages

Definition Of Perspective Perspective brings an understanding that any answer to a complicated problem can be acceptable. Perspective accepts everything comes with a point of view…from the beholder or writer. Perspective means nothing is taken for granted, overlooked, or assumed

What of it? Is the glass half full OR half empty?

What of it? Azaria has only got $5.00 to buy lollies OR at least, she has got $5.00 to spend?

What of it? Is there only one way of solving a problem? Or are there other possible solutions?

What of it? Are you as a teacher open to other possible methods of instruction and solutions?

The Power Of Perspective With perspective new light can be shone on an old problem or solution. With perspective new theories and paradigm shifts can occur. With perspective a new history can be written.

Advantages Of Perspective An ability to deliberately take and consider multiple perspectives. For example a student can explain the advantages and disadvantages of using a car or public transport rather than walking to school.

Advantages Of Perspective An ability to take an author’s point of view and examine it and not just accept it. For example after reading several articles by astronauts about experiences in space, students try and write an account of what it might be like to travel into space.

Advantages Of Perspective An ability to grasp a real understanding rather than plain recall. For example a student can come up with arguments for and against nuclear power as a source of electricity.

Disadvantages Of Perspective Often used as extra credit questions when they should be an integral part of instruction and assessment. Understanding using perspective does not use simple multiple choice questions and answers. Today’s trends in data collection are not supportive of perspective. Too long and open-ended. Never a simple yes or no answer. Some teachers do not like that. Associated with a liberal education.
