Evaluation: Over to you! One student said the following about the extract from The Great Gatsby: “The writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound over-the-top and amazing.” To what extent do you agree? Which statement do you agree with the most? Justify your answer with evidence from the text. Stretch: Can you write your own statement? I agree to a great extent that the writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound over-the-top and amazing. I agree to a large extent that the writer’s use of description makes Gatsby’s parties sound ‘over-the-top’ and amazing, however I also think the writer creates a sense of mystery that hints at something slightly stranger and more sinister going on. I agree to some extent that Gatsby’s parties are over the top and amazing, however throughout the whole extract the idea of worshipping materialism (greed for money) is also built up.

Essay Dissection Group Tasks Annotate the essay with the different skills shown on the mark scheme. Use the mark scheme to give the essay a band and a mark. Consider how you could improve this essay. Write on a post it note a summary of how to answer Question 4. Whose summary do you think best captures what we need to do for Question 4?

You are now going to have a go at answering your own evaluation question 20 Marks Teacher to talk through extract and clear up any misunderstandings. Now write your overview statement and your first paragraph. You will complete this for Home Learning. As we read, highlight anything that you think links to Hale being nervous and unsafe. Let’s practice question 1! Write down four reasons why Hale feels nervous and unsafe.
