“Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” Spoken From The Cross “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” Luke 23:44-49 Introduction The words of Jesus Spoken From The Cross are wonderful to behold. They teach us much about our savior, and help us in our walk of holiness. His demeanor on the cross speaks of great character, and love as He endured when adversity struck. “Father forgive them” – Love for mankind and desire for them to be saved. “Woman behold your son. Behold your mother.” – Love and provision for family, and mankind. Recognition of hardship. “Today you will be with Me in paradise” – Desire for our salvation, and power to give it to us. Strength of mercy and grace. “My God, why have you forsaken Me?” – A cry of agony and loneliness, yet with the realization of victory. A cry of faith. “I Thirst” – Spoken by a man, suffering as a man. He endured physical suffering to bring us water that would forever quench our thirst. “It is finished” – everything that needed to take place to provide redemption for man was given, and overtaken in relief, He spoke. Luke 23:46 is yet another phrase spoken by Jesus that speaks volumes about His life, and provides us instruction and aid in ours. A consideration of the indications of this phrase prove most beneficial.

Only Jesus Has the Power Voluntary Death Only Jesus Has the Power – John 10:17-18; 15:13 – He Submitted to God – Hebrews 5:7-8 – Jesus Died Voluntarily Only Jesus had the power. John 10:17-18 – Jesus did not have His life stolen from Him, He laid it down of His own accord. 15:13 – Jesus’ love was the greatest love. This is one of many reasons why the blood of bulls and goats was not sufficient, but the blood of Jesus was and is. (Animals had no choice, Jesus did.) He submitted to God in His death. Hebrews 5:7-8 – He cried to God to let the cup pass, but submitted willingly in obedience. Jesus death was not a result of His plan being thwarted, but carried out. His body failed under the torture of the cross, but He volunteered Himself to be there. HE committed His spirit into God’s hands. 

– Psalm 19:1; 95:5; Isaiah 48:13; Psalm 95:4; Isaiah 40:12– The Hands of God Creative Power – Psalm 19:1; 95:5; Isaiah 48:13; Psalm 95:4; Isaiah 40:12– Sustaining Power – Job 12:10; Psalm 145:16; Acts 17:28– The Hands of God. Creative Power Psalm 19:1; 95:5; Isaiah 48:13 – God created everything we see. We fail to comprehend the vast creation, yet He is described as simply making these things with His hand. Psalm 95:4; Isaiah 40:12 – His transcendence remains. We are swallowed up by the dimensions of creation, but they fit in His hand. His hands are all powerful. They are limitless. They are a safe haven in which we can commit our lives. Sustaining Power Job 12:10; Psalm 145:16; Acts 17:28 – We only exist because of God’s powerful hand, and our continued existence is for the same reason. God has the ability to provide for us, and sustain us. To protect us.

Committing Oneself Into God’s Hands Commit > Fall – Hebrews 10:31; Ecclesiastes 12:6-7; Luke 12:4-5 – When did Jesus commit His spirit? – Luke 2:42; 1 Peter 2:21-24 – Psalm 31:1-5 Committing Oneself Into God’s Hands. Commit > Fall Hebrews 10:31 – It is a terrible thing to FALL into these hands, but to commit oneself into these hands is a blessing. Ecclesiastes 12:6-7 – When we die we lose control of our spirit. It returns to God, and He does with it as He has determined. The admonition is to remember your Creator while you can. Commit your spirit to Him while you can, otherwise you will fall into the terrible hands of judgment. Luke 12:4-5 – The fear of man should not exist, for they cannot control your spirit, only you can. (but after death, you can do not more for your spirit.) When did Jesus commit His spirit to God? Luke 2:49 – from a young age Jesus was committed to God. 1 Peter 2:21-24 – Instead of retaliating upon the cross, and leading up to the cross, He committed Himself to God. Jesus last words on the cross were not a final attempt to render obedient trust to God, but was the realization of that and the blessedness of such upon death. Psalm 31:5 – Psalm which Jesus quotes from. (Became a nighttime prayer among Israelites – not something said only right before death) V. 1-5 – The idea of Jesus committing His spirit, and David committing his spirit, were lifetime actions. Showing “trust” in God for the first time before death is not trust at all. If we are to expect blessings from God from eternity in His mighty abode, we must commit ourselves to Him now.

A Deposit in God’s Trust Commit – παρατίθημι – to place alongside, i.e. present (food, truth); by implication, to deposit (as a trust or for protection): — allege, commend, commit (the keeping of), put forth, set before. Trusting God With Our Eternity – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Peter 4:19 – A Deposit in God’s Trust Commit Commit – g3908. παρατίθημι paratithēmi; from 3844 and 5087; to place alongside, i.e. present (food, truth); by implication, to deposit (as a trust or for protection): — allege, commend, commit (the keeping of), put forth, set before. Jesus was dying, and He committed His spirit to God for “Safe keeping.” God takes care of His own when their lives on earth are over. Trusting God with our Eternity 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 – A Christian is one who trusts God with their spirit’s wellbeing after death. Our trust in God releases the fear of death through Jesus’ resurrection. We believe we will be raised to be with Him forever. 1 Peter 4:19 – This commitment and trust must exist while we live today.

“Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” Spoken From The Cross “Father, ‘into Your hands I commit My spirit’” Conclusion Jesus had confidence in His death because He was right with God, and had committed His spirit into His hands for His entire life. That same security is offered to us, even at this time. There is a substantial comfort and safety which is afforded us on earth if we commit ourselves to God – a peace which surpasses all understanding.
