The Rich Man and Zach Luke 18: & Luke 19:1-10

Rich Man and Zach Similarities Both were Rich Both wanted to see Jesus

The Rich Man and Zach

Rich Man and Zach: Differences: Rich Man Good Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? Jesus answered, …You know the commandments: You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not testify falsely. Honor your father and mother. The man replied, Ive carefully obeyed all these commandments since I was young. Zacchaeus Bad There was a man there named Zacchaeus. He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich… The people were displeased. He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner, they grumbled.

Rich Man and Zach: Differences: Rich Man Good –Saint Ive carefully obeyed all these commandments since I was young. –Respected a religious leader who was very rich. Zacchaeus Bad -Sinner He has gone to be the guest of a notorious sinner, they grumbled. -Despised He was the chief tax collector in the region, and he had become very rich.

Rich Man and Zach: Differences: Rich Man Given no name Arrogant Once a religious leader asked Jesus this question: Good Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life? Zacchaeus Named Humble He tried to get a look at Jesus, but he was too short to see over the crowd. 4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree beside the road, for Jesus was going to pass that way.

Rich Man and Zach: Differences: Rich Man Selfish When Jesus heard his answer, he said, There is still one thing you havent done. Sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. But when the man heard this he became sad, for he was very rich. Zacchaeus Sacrificial Zacchaeus stood before the Lord and said, I will give half my wealth to the poor, Lord, and if I have cheated people on their taxes, I will give them back four times as much!

Rich Man and Zach: Differences: Rich Man Lost When Jesus saw this, he said, How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God! In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God! Those who heard this said, Then who in the world can be saved? He replied, What is impossible for people is possible with God. Zacchaeus Saved Jesus responded, Salvation has come to this home today, for this man has shown himself to be a true son of Abraham. For the Son of Man* came to seek and save those who are lost.

Philippians 3: I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. 8 Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ 9 and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ.* For Gods way of making us right with himself depends on faith. 10 I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised him from the dead. I want to suffer with him, sharing in his death, 11 so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

Rich Man and Zach: Similarity They both had faith – Rich Man put his faith in money and good works – Zach put his faith in the transformative grace of Jesus
