WWI Breaks Out M A N I *A*

Militarism = glorification of armed strength Germany = leader – upset balance of power France and GB attempt to keep up with munitions’ production

Alliances =when countries agree to defend one another or act together aggressively Triple Alliance = Germany, Austria Hungary and Italy Triple Entente = France, GB, and Russia

Nationalism Pride in one’s country or the desire to create an autonomous country Result of multi – ethnic empires Pan-Slavism Pan Germanism

Imperialism Countries were already vying for the same overseas territories AH – annexed Bosnia and Herzegovina (1908) Russia – interested in Balkans France – Alsace Lorraine Italy – AH’s territory

Assassination June 28th, 1914 = Gavril Princip (member of the Black Hand) shot and killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo

How did this lead to war? AH issues ultimatum to Serbia – conduct inquiry –Serbia refuses – AH declares war Russia backs Serbia Germany backs AH Germany declares war on Russia/FR GB declare war on Germany Italy remains neutral

New/Old? Alliances Allies = GB, Fr, and Russia Central Powers = Germany, AH and Ottoman Empire US = “neutral”

Schlieffen Plan Use Majority of German army to attack Belgium – surprise outcome

Germans stopped by France and GB at the 1st Battle of the Marne Germans dug trenches – making “Dead Man’s Land” and a LONG War…

Battle of the Somme – huge casualties GB = 60 K “Only way out of the trenches was on a stretcher.”

New Weapons of War

American Neutrality In action but not thought! Most supported the Allies

Challenges to Neutrality British blockade of Germany disrupted trade German U-boat activity 100 killed on March 28, 1915 Lusitania sunk by German U-boat torpedo – 128 Americans killed Arabic (BR) Sussex (FR)

Closure As a neutral country what would your response be to the sinking of these ships and the deaths of Americans?
