Special Topics Syllabus: My Info Instructor: Mrs. Candice Robinson, BAS, LVT   Contact Information: Email: crpetemergency@aol.com Website: http://crobinson-vti.weebly.com Advisement/Office Hours: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays by individual appointment or group. If you receive a request to attend advisement or you request advisement and do not come to advisement, it will affect your professionalism grade. Please email to schedule appointment times for advisement at least 24 hours in advance to guarantee availability. Advisement is NOT to reprimand you for your grades, but to HELP you succeed.

Syllabus: Course Description Special Topics Syllabus: Course Description The student will learn the basic care of sick and injured animals, including general patient maintenance, supportive care, administration of medicines and first aid. The student will demonstrate injections (IM, IV), venipuncture, intravenous catheter placement, dental prophylaxis, fluid therapy calculations and administration, ECG applications, wound care, bandaging, and cystocentesis.

Grade will be calculated based on the total number of points received by the student. Example: Possible 1000 points. Student obtains 850/1000 points. 850 / 1000 x 100 = 85% grade Please allow 3-4 school days for grades to be posted. Special Topics Syllabus: Professionalism points Everyone is awarded professionalism points at the beginning of the course. Professionalism will be assessed by the instructor on a daily basis. Please consider the following: Leaving the room during class time is not permitted. Cell phone use during class is not permitted. Sleeping is not tolerated at any time. If you are asked to come to advisement, you must schedule an appointment in a timely manner. Disrespect towards an instructor or fellow student in any manner will not be tolerated. Not adhering to the guidelines in this syllabus may result in point deductions.

Special Topics Syllabus: Attendance You are considered absent if you arrive more than 15 minutes late, leave 15 minutes early, or miss more than 15 minutes total from this class. Due to the fact that this course is 16 weeks, you are allowed 4 absences without your final grade being affected. Please refer to the student handbook regarding absences affecting your grade. To maintain professionalism, you must communicate with Mrs. Robinson in advance, via email, if you are going to be absent. All attendance is kept updated in iGrade daily; it is your responsibility to check it every day. You have 48 hours to dispute any absence or tardy; after that the tardy/absence stands as recorded. Reminder: 3 Tardies = 1 absence

Special Topics Syllabus: Attendance Labs This class involves a significant amount of lab time and requires many skills to be obtained and signed off on. If you miss a lab, you must schedule time to meet with an instructor outside of class. You will not receive the points from the lab, but the skill must be completed. Sign off on completed skills on the day they are obtained.

Special Topics Syllabus: Test/exams Test/exams Make-up Exams Tests will consist of multiple choice, true/false, fill-in-the-blank, and short answer/essay and may be written or practical application. Post test review is available by scheduling advisement Any student who shares any information regarding topics, format, or test questions with another student is cheating, and subject to significant penalties and disciplinary action. Cheating will not be tolerated. In the event of an absence regardless of the reason, the student must notify the instructor prior to the absence and tests will be made up at the time of the midterm/final exam for a maximum of 70% (30% deduction) unless otherwise excused by school director. Quizzes: Quizzes may be announced or unannounced. There is no make- up available for a missed quiz.

Special Topics Course outline A calendar will be attached to the syllabus on my website for a “tentative” schedule of the term contents and structure. Please be advised, the instructor will adjust as seen fit at any time for both labs and lectures. A term project may be assigned. Topic of term project TBD. It is recommended the student is to assume a quiz can be given at any time in class over materials covered. Students are responsible for individual reading of the textbook. It is strongly recommended the student read ahead. Any content of the chapters is eligible to be on a quiz or test.

Special Topics Classroom Rules Conduct, Electronics, & Coursework

Special Topics Classroom rules: Conduct Vet Tech Institute Uniform must always be worn, unless information is provided to the student for a special occasion. Please refer to the student handbook for the appropriate attire for the classroom. If a student arrives out of dress code, they will be asked to leave the classroom and an absence will be given. Each student is expected to have a watch and black pen with them at all times. No smart watches will be allowed during quizzes or examinations. Calculators. You are required to have a calculator every day. You will not be allowed to share calculators for any test or quiz.

Special Topics Classroom rules: Conduct cont… Sleeping in class will NOT be tolerated. The instructor may request the student to be excused from class and marked absent at their discretion. We are all here to acquire knowledge. Time is important. If a student is excused from class because of sleeping, they will be marked absent. Professionalism points will also be lost. No eating or drinking (other than water in an approved container) When there are animals in the classroom all water bottles must be out of sight. No gum is allowed during labs. No background chatter. Please ask me any questions you may have. do not hold separate conversations while I’m lecturing or talking with students. Respectful and professional attitudes towards myself and each other. This is a safe place, no question is a stupid question and no one should be judging anyone, as we are all learning together.

Classroom Rules Reading Assignments and Power Point Presentations: Each student is responsible for reading all assigned materials. Reading assignments should be read ahead of class time so that we may discuss subjects, rather than hearing the subject for the first time during lecture. Power Point presentations and handouts may be made available to you through my website. You are responsible for printing out the notes prior to class time. No laptop, tablet or cell phone use will be allowed during class time. If you record a lecture you must verbally indicate you are doing so before starting and place recording device at the front of the room.

Special Topics Classroom Rules: Coursework Homework Due at the beginning of class, NO late homework is accepted No make-ups are offered on homework or in-class assignments Quizzes, Slide ID Exams, Practical Exam (not written) No make-ups will be offered Written Exams All missed exams, excused or unexcused, will be made up during the same period as the midterm or final exam, with no extra time given. The maximum score to earned is a 70% (a 30% deduction from the overall score).

Special Topics Lab Expectations Animals should be signed out in the chart immediately upon their arrival into the lab room. An instructor must be present each time an animal is poked with a needle. Animal use must be charted under Classroom Use- include the skill you were practicing Ex. If you are drawing blood from the forelimb, and collect 0.2 ml, this would be recorded as a successful cephalic blood collection. Note- this may or may not be considered successfully completing the skill for class purposes and signing off Ensure all band-aids (elastic bandage material/cotton) have been removed, and any blood cleaned off, before returning an animal to the cage. An animal placed in a kennel with a bandage on will result in a lab grade of 0 for the day for the entire group responsible for that animal.

Special Topics Lab Expectations Tables should be disinfected after each animal. Ensure all trash is thrown away. No cell phone use during lab. Using your phone during class time will result in a grade of 0 for the day.  The number of animals used each day is variable, and are all assigned by the instructors. Please do not ask if you can have another animal- remember there are many other students in lab that all need practice! If additional animals are available, the instructors will assign them to students accordingly. Completed skills should be signed off on by the end of class on the day the skill was successfully obtained. Please initial and date next to your name. Not signing off on successfully completing a skill will result in point deductions.  *Husbandry rules regarding animal handling should be followed at all times
