The Text And Its Setting Israel encounters Balak, king of the Moabites (Num. 22:4) Balak has an idea He chooses not to fight against Israel He hires Balaam to curse Israel (Num. 22:5-8) Balak’s mistake was underestimating God His plans, vis a vis Balaam, were thwarted again and again Balaam, finally, did realize Balak’s futility God cannot be bought off or used (Num. 23:19)

It is the timeless lesson of Isaiah 55:8-9 It is not just a lesson for Balak and Balaam This is a lesson that we need to learn as well
