Helping Students Show What They Know: Analyzing Classroom Assessment Practices

As a result of participating in this module, participants will be able to: Identify a variety of assessment purposes for understanding student learning. Determine the neurodevelopmental requirements of an assessment. Identify strategies to support improved classroom performance on an assessment. Use a variety of indicators to measure academic progress.

Materials You Will Need Table of Neurodevelopmental Constructs Glossary of Neurodevelopmental Terms (optional) An assessment that you brought with you Module participant booklet

Assessment Article Activity Directions 20 minutes Read the article found on pages 2-6. Highlight one sentence from the article that aligns with your current assessment practices and document how it aligns on page 7. Highlight one sentence from the article that caused you to think differently about your current assessment practices and document how it has caused you to think differently on page 7. 5 minutes Share your quotations and explanations with a table partner.

Assessment Format Activity Directions Respond to 2 questions on chart paper: Which 3 functions are most in demand with your assigned assessment format? What outcomes might you notice from students with weaknesses in any of these 3 functions? Select a spokesperson to share your responses.

Analyzing Assessment Activity Directions 20 minutes Analyze the assessment you brought with you (individually or with a partner). Complete the “What? So What? Now What?” form on page 9 of your participant booklet. Share your analysis with a table partner if you haven’t already.
