Day 7 Ionic Bonds Sci 10 Chemistry

Common Ion charges Remember 1+ 3+ 3- 2- 1- 2+ Charges of transition metals will be given in the periodic table as their formation is complicated.

Ionic bonds During the activity with the ion tiles, what did you notice about the CHARGES? Total charge is always zero Building a rectangle ensured that the compound would be neutral (zero) This is why you NEVER write charges in the formula of an ionic compound

Nomenclature = naming IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) created rules to be followed when naming chemical compounds Name the cation (the metal) Ex: KBr potassium Name the anion (the non-metal) using the ending “-ide” Ex: KBr potassium bromide

Other examples – Name these ionic compounds NaCl sodium chloride MgBr2 magnesium bromide K2O potassium oxide

Other examples – Write the formula Ex: lithium chloride Determine the charge of each atom: Li has a charge of 1+, Cl has a charge of 1- Draw circles in a table to represent each element until their total equals zero. Write the symbol of each atom, starting with the metal (positive) ion. Add subscripts if necessary to show the number of atoms present.

Other examples: Write the formula Ex: magnesium phosphide Charge of each atom: Mg 2+ P 3- Draw circles in a table to represent each element until their total equals zero. Write the symbol of each atom, starting with the metal (positive) ion. Add subscripts if necessary to show the number of atoms present.

To Do: Go back to the tile activity – Write the names of all of the compounds formed in Part B Sheet – Day 7 Practice: Ionic Compounds
