Educator Externship Summer 2017

Associated and General Contractors (AGC) and Willamette Promise (WP) Educator Externships The Educator Externship has the following objectives: Infuse Real-World Relevance: Experience firsthand the skills, knowledge, and technologies expected of students as they enter the modern workplace. Develop Partnerships: Foster relationships with local business professionals in high-demand, high-wage industry sectors. Foster Multi-Disciplinary Connections: Explore alongside educators from various disciplines to develop curriculum, spaces, processes and/or systems that help students make connections between academic and technical information.

Workforce Shortage in the Construction Trades A 2015 survey by the Associated General Contractors of America revealed that nearly 80 percent of construction businesses are having a hard time finding qualified skilled labor.

The Externship We spent 2 weeks learning about training opportunities, visiting job sites and construction companies, interviewing staff, and even building things.

Major Take-Aways There are many jobs available for our students The most commonly requested job skills are: Show up consistently Work hard (sweat and get wet) Do what you’re asked Pass a drug test Paid apprenticeships and internships opportunities (with benefits) are available for most trades.

Major Take-Aways Most apprenticeships provide Paid, on-the-job training Tuition free classes (evening/weekend) Journeyman level status after 4 years Most apprenticeships require: High School Diploma or GED Passing grades in High School Algebra 1 or Math60/70 college credit.

Things to consider at SHS A lack of math credits/skills is common reason that prevents/delays people from entering trades training programs Consider extending Willamette Promise to offer Math 60/70 Credit Develop integrated CTE/Math classes as way to incorporate math skill and offer math credit for CTE/Trades classes. Have regular guest speakers from different industries visit our classes to help students become aware of jobs that are available and what they need to do to prepare for those careers
