Short Courses Project management Team building Coaching and mentoring Process improvement Time management Presentation skills Putting data to work Ethical decision making Program planning

FETP Standard Curriculum Management Competencies Manage a field project Plan a field project Monitor or evaluate a project or program Manage staff and resources Develop a budget for a project or program Be an effective team leader and member Lead and participate in teams Use interpersonal communication skills to enable efficient and sound leadership in the PH community Manage personal responsibilities Manage time effectively Competency statements identified in the management domain of the FETP standard curriculum project, completed in 2005.

Proposed Management Curriculum Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4* Year 1 Team Building: 4 hrs Conflict Management:2-4 hrs Manage your time, manage your stress: 2 hrs (can be distance learning) Project Management: 2 days Monitoring and Evaluation: 1.5 days Monitoring a Surveillance System** Year 2 Budgeting (self paced + homework. 1 hr classtime to review) Introduction to Leadership 2 hrs Performance Management 4 hrs Values Based Decision Making: 4 hrs SMDP has almost all training materials that FETP requires for the management competency as it is defined. Exception: M&E, budgeting – hope to complete both of these this year. Central America FETP has both of these, developed in English before translated into Spanish. CA FETP also identified monitoring a surveillance system as a skill requirement and has a nice module for this that has been used by other FETPs, feedback – very useful. Tho FETP standard curriculum does not include an instructional goal for monitoring a Surveillance System, it does fall into M&E competency - - we are recommending its inclusion in FETP core curriculum. Slide shows recommended pacing of management topics, assuming: Year 1 field work focuses on outbreak investigations, data analysis & surveillance system evaluation Year 2 is when an analytic study is conducted and when a resident takes more of a leadership role in a project, and may be asked to mentor/supervise a year 1 resident. We recognize that due to costs/logistics sometimes course work has to be front loaded. If this is the case we recommend that the topics listed in Q1 be taught in the first course of the program, and that the remaining topics be taught together later in year 1.
