Mark 4:35-41

35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”

Faith and Fear & Anxiety When it comes to faith, what we do, demonstrates what we really believe. Sometimes there’s a good reason to fear – God-given for preservation Sometimes our fears are unfounded What happens to fears and anxieties when we know the power of who Jesus really is? 37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?”

The reluctant prophet – Jonah The Lake Incident – Jesus Sent on a mission to the enemy Disobedient and sailed in opposite direction Obediently boated toward destination. Jonah asleep in the inner bowels of ship Jesus asleep at the stern of the boat Storm caused by Jonah’s disobedience Storm a barrier to Jesus’ mission God controls nature to make Jonah obey Jesus Himself controls nature The godless sailors “feared YHWH exceedingly, and they offered a sacrifice to YHWH and made vows... The disciples “were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?” Feared YHWH (The Lord God Almighty), who calmed the storm. Feared Jesus, who calmed the storm

Faith and Fear & Anxiety When it comes to faith, what we do, demonstrates what we really believe. Sometimes there’s a good reason to fear – God-given for preservation Sometimes our fears are unfounded What happens to fears and anxieties when we know the power of who Jesus really is? The only one who has the power to control the weather, is God The height of human arrogance – to believe we have power to control the weather

Job 38: 8  “Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb, 9  when I made clouds its garment and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10  and prescribed limits for it and set bars and doors, 11  and said, ‘Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stayed’?

Job 38: 22  “Have you entered the storehouses of the snow, or have you seen the storehouses of the hail, 23  which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war? 24  What is the way to the place where the light is distributed, or where the east wind is scattered upon the earth? 25  “Who has cleft a channel for the torrents of rain and a way for the thunderbolt, 26  to bring rain on a land where no man is, on the desert in which there is no man, 27  to satisfy the waste and desolate land, and to make the ground sprout with grass?

28  “Has the rain a father, or who has begotten the drops of dew? 29  From whose womb did the ice come forth, and who has given birth to the frost of heaven? 30  The waters become hard like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

Faith and Fear & Anxiety When it comes to faith, what we do, demonstrates what we really believe. Sometimes there’s a good reason to fear – God-given for preservation Sometimes our fears are unfounded What happens to fears and anxieties when we know the power of who Jesus really is? The only one who has the power to control the weather, is God The height of human arrogance – to believe we have power to control the weather But Jesus has the power to control the weather because Jesus is The Son of God The Disciples had “deilos” fear – cowardly; timid; fearful After Jesus acted, “phobos” fear – terror, alarm, fright & reverence, respect, awe They were afraid they were going to die, because they still didn’t have faith But when they saw the Power of God in Jesus, they were struck with terror and awe at the presence of God

Romans 8:31.... “If God is for us, who can be against us?”.... ...... 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Do not fear; Do not be afraid; Fear not Faith and Fear & Anxiety When it comes to faith, what we do, demonstrates what we really believe. Sometimes there’s a good reason to fear – God-given for preservation Sometimes our fears are unfounded What happens to fears and anxieties when we know the power of who Jesus really is? The only one who has the power to control the weather, is God The height of human arrogance – to believe we have power to control the weather But Jesus has the power to control the weather because Jesus is The Son of God The Disciples had “deilos” fear – cowardly; timid; fearful After Jesus acted, “phobos” fear – terror, alarm, fright & reverence, respect, awe They were afraid they were going to die, because they still didn’t have faith But when they saw the Power of God in Jesus, they were struck with terror and awe at the presence of God For disciples of Jesus, God loves us, is with us, and holds us in the palm of His hand. A worldly perspective on life is the source of fears and anxieties But when we have given ourselves to Jesus, there’s nothing left to be afraid of Do not fear; Do not be afraid; Fear not
