Welcome to Social Studies 8 Worldview The Renaissance: Presentations Virtual Fieldtrip

Agenda for the Day Presentations!!! Yay!!!! Are you excited????? I am!!! Questions about Lesson 7 and 8 this week. Creating an Authentic Diary/journal/log. Exploration and Imperialism Questions?????

Reasons to Explore… commerce—the opportunity to make money through the trade of valuable resources curiosity—the opportunity to learn about the world Christianity—the opportunity to spread the Christian faith conquest—the desire to claim a territory, with its peoples and natural resources, for your own country.

Creating an Authentic Document…. Step 1: Gather primary documents There are excellent primary documents from the Age of Discovery, including diaries and letters, that are available in print and on the Internet. I have inlcuded the links in your material section above. Gather a number of suitable primary documents that portray exploration experiences, intercultural contact, expansionism and imperialism. Step 2: Learn about the Age of Discovery Use print or digital resources to build your background knowledge about the Age of Discovery. What did you learn about the accomplishments of the Age, such as voyages of discovery, the establishment of trade routes and knowledge about other continents? Record your thoughts and impressions about these things in your notes.

Step 3: Rate the motivations of the explorers Rate the extent to which each of the four Cs (above) was a motivating factor in the explorations of explorers; e.g., John Cabot, Jacques Cartier, Christopher Columbus. Now decide, from your understanding of the explorers’ points of view who accomplished the most; e.g., economic gain, intellectual advancement or religious influence? Use the graphic organizer above to record this information. You do NOT have to submit this to me yet. You will submit this when you have finished the lesson, along with the "authentic" document. Step 4: Analyze the Primary Documents People in the past acted and behaved as they did in the spirit of the times - much as they do today and during other periods in our history. It is VERY important that you keep this in mind so that when making judgements, they should be based on the evidence about the prevailing values and beliefs of the times. Avoid making judgements based on contemporary/todays motives, values and beliefs.

Step 5: Develop criteria for an "authentic" document You must make sure that you include the following information in your document: accurate information specific details empathic, first person perspective portrayal of worldview of the historical period. You must ensure that your conclusions are: supported by facts within the document supported by known facts outside of the document. Step 6: And now get writing.....Rewrite a historical document based upon an alternative point of view Feel free to work in groups to examine the different documents. After you and your partner have analysed the documents, you will need to work alone to rewrite the document based upon an alternative point of view. For example: the king’s point of view may illustrate the perspective of royalty, the priest’s point of view may illustrate a religious perspective, the Elder's point of view may illustrate an Aboriginal perspective.
