What will my child be learning about this year? New Beginnings and settling in. Sling, Spear or Sword? Dahl, the play and me. Romans: Ruthless or Remarkable? River deep, mountain high. What shapes our village? ES New Beginnings and settling in- PSHE led, School values, rights, resilience. Sling Spear or Sword? is history led –Stone Age, bronze age Iron Age Literacy led around Roald Dahl. This term will include a year 3 performance! Romans: History led, picking up from where we left off. History is taught chronologically. Rivers/ mountains: Geography led. What shapes our world. Village study- where we left off in the previous topic, focusing on why people settled here originally to what the village is like now.

How are reading, writing and maths taught? Reading- individual reading practise with an adult, group/ paired practise, reading skills lessons etc. Writing- spelling lessons, handwriting lessons, grammar and punctuation bites as well as/ part of English lessons. Opportunities to publish with real audience and purpose. Maths- ‘Magical Maths’ sessions and daily maths lessons. AW

How will homework be organised? Weekly practise of skills/ assessment Some skills challenges during the week if necessary 5 reads a week a least- recorded in reading record. Some project work over a few weeks. ES Due on a Thursday and sent home on a Friday. NB some homework will also be set on Education City- a primary school resource available online with unique logins for your child. Reading records are for home use and should be filled out by parents/adults listening to your child read at home. These will be checked weekly. Separate notes are kept by the class teacher in school. Star readers. Spellings are sent home (10 a week) a mixture of y3 high frequency and topic words. When can my child change their reading book? First thing in the morning – from 8:30 and at break and lunchtimes. Library books will start to come home next week. Reading scheme book is the priority. Please make sure these stay in your child’s bag once they are finished with. Should I be helping my child with their homework? Please do help encourage your child to complete their homework but allow them space to try it on their own too and do not worry if they make mistakes! Any concerns about homework should be written in your child’s homework book
