Unit 1 The Bonds Between Us

Theodore Roosevelt “The welfare of each of us is dependent fundamentally upon the welfare of all of us”

What are standards? They are learning goals What you should know What you should be able to do Why should you care? Ever wonder “Why are we doing this?” Now you have the answer! Knowing the standards will help you know what you need to be successful

Writing Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.

Translation I can write to explain something. I can introduce a topic and organize my ideas to make connections. I choose relevant facts, details, quotes, and examples when writing.

Reading Literature Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Translations I can prove that what I think about a story is right by backing it up with specific details from the story.

Speaking & Listening Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions with diverse partners on grade 9 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas an expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Translations I can prepare for and participate in class discussions. I can ask questions, encourage others to participate, and clarify or challenge their ideas. I can respond thoughtfully to different perspectives. I can summarize points of agreement and disagreement, and justify or change my own views in light of new ideas and information.
