FS Unit 6: Lesson 8 Module 1 Teacher's Manual I think the purpose of Freshman Seminar is. . The purpose of 25-minute module is to help students understand what goals are. At the end of the module, students will be able to explain how maintaining a healthy respect for rules, authority, and choices can help them achieve their goals in Freshman Seminar, other classes, and life. Begin this module by asking students, based on what you’ve learned so far, complete the following statement: I think the purpose of Freshman Seminar is. . . Have students write their responses on a piece of paper. All students are required to submit a response, regardless of what they write. FS Unit 6: Lesson 8 Module 1 Teacher's Manual GOAL SEMINAR ORIENTATION You will introduce the students to multisensory. Have students divide up into three groups. Click to display the three words GOAL, SEMINAR, and ORIENTATION. Tell the groups they will work together to form a definition of each word. Each group should record their definition of each word. Set the online timer for 3-minutes per word to keep the module moving. Generally, each group spends approximately 3 minutes per word, which means approximately a total of 9 to 10 minutes. MID-TERM Something you hope to accomplish within the next one to three years. LONG-TERM Something you hope to accomplish within the next five years. Tell students that you’re going to discuss three specific types of goals. Select a student recall the definition of “GOAL”. FS Unit 6: Lesson 8 Module 1 Teacher's Manual Freshman Seminar Goals Partner Reading Activity and Discussion: Student Worksheet #5 Direct students to Student Worksheet #?? (download versions available at: http://mmgstudent.weebly.com/fs-u1.html ). Student will read the four goal areas, and select the goals they believe are the most difficult and explain why. Each student should have the opportunity to speak in the discussion. Teacher will review the vocabulary terms clarifying, obstacles and work ethic. Teacher should encourage at least five students to share their responses with the class. Direct students to use their “What’s Your Goal?” worksheet to enter in their short-, mid-, and long-terms goals. Click the online timer icon to set a time for this activity. FS Unit 6: Lesson 8 Module 1 Teacher's Manual Roadblocks Things that can cause you to take a harder path to your goals. Think about people, things, beliefs, situations, actions, etc. Create a list of all the roadblocks you can think of and when get ready to trash them! Tell students, “Let’s talk about roadblocks.” Review the first bullet, “Roadblocks are things that can cause you to take a harder path to your goals.” Have students reflect upon the people, things, etc. that could be a roadblock. Have each student create a list of roadblocks they believe could make it difficult for them to achieve their goals on a blank piece of paper. Once everyone has finished the teacher should circulate around the students with a trashcan instructing them to their roadblocks in the trash! Students could also throw their roadblocks away at the end of class. OPTION: To create a dramatic symbolic gesture, bring a large garbage bag (preferably with ties). Tell them that Freshman Seminar is designed to help them develop their goal-setting skills, study, and other skills that they will use the skills not only in FS, but the skills they learn will also lead to success in in other classes too.
