What should I expect when taking a course Online? Course content & assignments are available on Brightspace Certain level of independent learning is needed Requires self-motivation, discipline and great time management skills Feedback from instructor occurs within 24-48hrs Frequent participation is key to success Flexible and convenient to a degree

Myths VS. Reality Myths Reality Online courses are “easier” than face-to-face courses Could be harder depending on your skill level Involve more commitment than face-to-face courses Online courses are self-paced Not exactly, your syllabus guides you on when you should submit assignments and participate Online courses are not as engaging as face-to-face courses Just as engaging as face-to-face courses when Using interactive conference tools and participating in discussion boards Frequent communication with peers

Time Commitment KEEP CALM STUDY ON Expect to spend approximately 3-4 hours per credit hour per week Example: 3 credit hour course requires about 9-12hrs of work per week Plan a weekly schedule to include your online course work KEEP CALM AND STUDY ON

Academic Dishonesty/Plagiarism Do your best to submit original work and paraphrase. Always document your sources. Please refer to the CCC student policy Manual - Pg. 70, 8.17 for plagiarism information Turn-it-In plagiarism software is used by instructors to support students in avoiding plagiarism

Computer Technology Requirements Access to a computer (personal, family-owned, library) PC or MAC can be used* Mobile devices* Internet Access Latest browser and plug-in software GOLDEN RULE: Always have a back up plan! MAC computers may not be compatible with some Computer Science courses All course work can NOT be completed with a Mobile Device Apps are available for Android and iOS devices

Logging Into Your Online Course Two options Option 1 Go to CCC Student Portal website using your ccc username and password. http://my.ccc.edu

When Do I Log Into My Course? FIRST day of class. You are required to complete week 1 assignments You are encouraged to log in at least 3 times a week. Failure to complete week 1 assignments means you will be issued a NSW (No Show Withdrawal) and dropped from the class. MEANING, NO tuition is refunded and your financial aid may also be affected. Failure to show evidence of actively participating in coursework by midterm through discussion forums and turning in assignments, you may receive an ADW (Administrative Withdrawal) and you will be dropped from the class.

How do I participate in my Online Learning Course? As an online student you will participate in your course in a variety of ways. The most common are: Brightspace (Student Learning Management System) Discussion Boards Assignments Group Assignments Turn-it- in Assignments Collaborate Ultra (live online interactive sessions) CCC student email account Proctored and Non-Proctored Exams Proctored exams must be taken at one of the seven CCC testing centers and the number of exams are determined by instructor. CCC student email account can be found at my.ccc.edu then outlook icon. Check email frequently

How do I participate in my Online Learning Course?: Examinations Online courses have two types of exams: Non- Proctored (exams taken at home ) Proctored (exams that have to be taken at one of 7 CCC campuses). Only the selected courses below have proctored exams If you’re late at the testing center (15mins maximum), it’s at the discretion of the testing site to allow you to take the test or not.

Where Do I Purchase Textbooks? Online through the Akademos website Students who wish to purchase their textbooks from a different bookstore should first visit the Akademos web site IDENTIFY ALL of your course materials, and make sure the authors, editions and ISBN #s are the same. NOTE: Financial Aid can be used to buy textbooks from Akademos. Students who wish to purchase their textbooks at their campus bookstore should first visit the Akademos web site. PRINT A COPY of your course material list, and bring the list to the bookstore. This will ensure that you purchase the CORRECT textbooks.
