The Idea The Users The Data To provide a prototype preliminary analysis of the distribution of manufacturing-related research grants in Ontario. The Users Local firms can partner with educational institutions that specialize in a specific area of research. Investors can use this data as a tool to guide them in their location decisions Students can use this data to help them in deciding where to pursue their post-secondary education. Researchers can use this information to become aware of the location of manufacturing- related research The Data The data used in this prototype comes from two federal datasets, the NSERC (Natural Science and Engineering Research Council) and the CFI (Canadian Foundation for Innovation), as well as a provincial dataset from the Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE).
The Breakdown The Universities The AoAs The prototype uses data from the years of 2007-2016 across 11 universities in Ontario, focusing on 14 manufacturing-related research grant areas. These are referred to as ‘Areas of Application’ by the databases. The Universities The AoAs University of Toronto University of Waterloo McMaster University Queens University Western University Trent University University of Guelph Wilfrid Laurier University Carleton University University of Ottawa York University Materials and Related Products Aerospace Chemical Manufacturing Mineral Resources Processed Food Products and Beverages Consumer Goods General Industrial Production Production and Operations Management Health-Related Manufacturing Machinery and Equipment Systems and Technology Process Management Metal Products Motor Vehicles
Future Prospects Expand to all Ontario universities Incorporate data on Ontario colleges Incorporate data on trade schools Add data from more funding agencies (federal and provincial) Incorporate with Trillium GIS with the objective of Enhancing the investment making decision of the manufacturer Improving the talent recruitment process Connecting manufacturers with suppliers
