Literary Focus A quest is a long and perilous journey taken in search of something of great value: a treasure, a kingdom, the hand of a fair maiden, or the answer to an important question. Centuries ago riddles were used often in stories, as a sort of test. A riddle is a puzzling question or problem.

Quickwrite Imagine you’re in a life-or-death situation. Your survival depends on giving the correct answer to one of these riddles: What do men want most in the world? What do women want most in the world? Write three answers to each riddle. Circle the one that you think gives you the best shot at survival.

Words to Know Chivalry: a code that governed knightly behavior, such as courage, honor, and readiness to help the weak. Countenance: face, appearance Loathsome: disgusting Sovereignty: control, authority Foresworn: untrue to one’s word; shown to be a liar Troth: engage to marry
