TAKING High school credit courses in Middle School Algebra 1 A/B Honors Geometry A/B World Languages Foundations of Computer Science (8th) Q: What if I’m not recommended? A: Teachers take into consideration many decision points to make their recommendations for next year’s course placements. Speak directly to the teacher for the specifics of any recommendation. Q: Can I try it, to see how I like it? A: Planning for success, we expect each student to be fully committed to all their courses, especially those with the added seriousness of high school credit. If a schedule change must be done, the impacted is unpredictable and the change itself is not guaranteed to be possible. (Example of dropping Honors Geometry for S2, there is no other math class option and taking a math class is a requirement.) Q: What can I expect regarding the level of work demand? A: High level of work demand, with a matching maturity level and independence on the part of the student. Q: How many courses should I take each year? A: Knowing the high level of work demand, and expected maturity, work ethic, independence and organization, consider your child. Q: How does a student earn credit? A: Depending on course… Advanced English Foundations of Art: succesful completion of BOTH Computer Art Fundamentals AND Foundations of Art to earn 1.0 HS credit ESS, Advanced Math, Foreign Language Q: Are the grades calculated into the HS GPA? A: Yes. The students in MS have an MPA, which shows up on their report card. The HS credit courses will then be calculated in GPA on HS transcript. (Show report card and MPA vs. GPA) Q: When does it go on the HS transcript? A: As student earns credit, it will be in database to go onto transcript. You won’t see a transcript until 9th grade. Q: What if I’m not doing well? Can a course be repeated? What happens to the grades? A: This is why making an appropriate choice is so important. Choose wisely, taking into consideration the child’s maturity level, work ethic, independence and organization. If falling behind, the student should speak with the teacher, make MAP appointments for re-teaching and reassessment, create a study group among high achieving peers. If still not doing well… if it’s a starting course in HS pathway, you can go down to a non-credit class. If it’s a second level, it could be repeated in the subsequent year. Adv English and ESS CANNOT be repeated, which is why only a B or higher will earn the credit. If repeating a course, the second grade earned will stand. A course must be repeated in the subsequent school year, i.e.: 9th grade.

State requirements for earning high school credit while in middle school Pass the course The final grades go on the HS transcript Repeating the course, or semester, replaces the grade on the HS transcript Optional to include courses in high school GPA for current 6th graders.
