Overview of Imaging and Tip Placement Procedures Craig Steffan UT Meeting 04/05/2001 Overview of Imaging and Tip Placement Procedures Craig Steffan

IFM Optical Mount Components Piece 1 - Coarse focus and positioning. Applies the same design for the IFM head. Piece 2 - Connects Peak Microscope to piece 1. Peak microscope threads onto the top portion, three screws connect it to piece 1. Illumination - Provided by optical fiber.

Other Components Positioning reticle - Whipple grid 100 squares in a 7 mm square area.

IFM Optics Mount Piece 2 Piece 1

IFM Optics Mount

IFM Imaging Procedure Place whipple grid on sample holder. Image 5 um square at a corner with IFM. Remove IFM head and replace with optical head. Place optical reticle on 5 um square corner Replace positioning reticle with sample.

IFM Imaging Procedure Move the sample to the desired testing location. Remove optical head and replace with IFM head. Image sample or begin force/creep profile.

Tip Placement Apparatus Z-stage X-Y Stage

Tip Placement Apparatus

Tip Placement Procedure Place sensor on X-Y stage. Place tip in forceps and connect to z-stage. Carefully apply epoxy to tip base and desired sensor position. Move tip into contact with the sensor. Turn on cartridge heater. (Not pictured)

Tip Placement Procedure After curing gradually lift (approx. 1 mm) the sensor off the X-Y stage. Disconnect forceps from the tip.
