Chapter 2-3 Subtracting Integers Unit 1 Chapter 2-3 Subtracting Integers

Subtracting Integers Rule When subtracting integers, remember three letters! K-A-O Keep Add Opposite Consider either the Same Sign Rule or the Different Sign Rule Ex: 8 – (-2) =8 + (+2) (“Keep” the 8, Change the subtract to an “Add” then make the – 2 opposite to a positive 2- now it’s the same sign rule) = 10

More Examples Ex 2: 8 – (- 3) = 8 + (+3) Keep Add Opposite– same sign rule = 11 Ex 3: 9 – 10 = 9 + (-10) Keep Add Opposite-different sign rule = -1 Ex 4: - 6 – 2 = -6 + (-2) Keep Add Opposite – same sign rule = - 8

Let’s practice 8 – 15 7 – (-3) - 3 – (-5) 9 – (-3) -10 – (-5) Let’s check our answers

Let’s check our answers! 8 – 15 = 8 + (-15) Keep Add Opposite – different sign rule = -7 2. 7– (-3) = 7 + (+3) Keep Add Opposite – same sign rule = 10 3. - 3 – (-5) = -3 + (+5) KAO– different sign rule = 2 4. 9 – (-3) = 9 + (+ 3) KAO – same sign rule = 12 -10 – (-5) = - 10 + (+5) KAO – different sign rule = -5
