Honeywell PA/VA Training

In one word , loudspeaker is to play sound What’s Loudspeaker? A loudspeaker (or "speaker") is an electroacoustic transducer that produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input. We need them to: PA: Play background music and voice in public applications VA: To clearly convey voice information in emergencies In one word , loudspeaker is to play sound

Important Specs of Loudspeaker Power/Impedance SPL/Sensitivity Directionality Dispersion Angle

Definition Power/Impedance SPL/Sensitivity Directionality Power rating is the amount of energy that a loudspeaker can handle without distortion. It is directly proportional to the volume. Impedance is the resistance within the enclosure to a flow of power from a speaker’s amplifier. It is used to limit the desired amount of power transferred to the speaker. Sound pressure level (SPL) is the loudness of sound. The unit for measuring SPL is Decibel (dB). Sensitivity is a measurement of the amount of sound output derived from a speaker with one watt of power input. Directionality Dispersion Angle Directionality indicates the spatial distribution of the sound intensity. For directional sound source, the SPL in different direction from the sound source will be different, which can be seen from the polar diagram. Dispersion angle defines the space a loudspeaker can cover. Usually, the bigger dispersion angle, the less loudspeakers can be used in the same space.

Some important Charts Polar Diagram To show the sound distribution in all directions Circuit Diagram To show how to connect the line of the transformer to the constant voltage amplifier Power tapping

Signal-to-Noise Ratio Initial sound signal (in dB) compared to the background (or ambient)sounds Ideal: 10 – 15 dB above average ambient sound Each doubling of power to a loudspeaker OR doubling of loudspeakers results in an increase of 3dB Doubling the distance between the listener and the sound source results in a 6dB loss

Frequency Response Frequency Response Curve Ideal range: 150 – 11KHz Average Human Listening Range: 200 – 5000 Hz Frequency response should be as flat as possible for the most intelligible sound Most Agency Standards require within 10 to15 B windows Frequency Response Curve - A visual representation of the dB level over a specific frequency range

Harmonic Distortion The average listener can detect 2% total harmonic distortion (THD) 15% distortion is considered to be non-intelligible Contributing Factors Tolerance of the message generator and amplifier Loading of the audio amplifier (load vs. available power) Mechanical factors Wires touching the cone of the speaker Excessive voltage drop in speaker line Vibration caused by poor installation Damaged speakers

Reverberation Closely spaced echoes that cannot be distinguished Minimizing reverberation is key to achieving acceptable intelligibility Factors influencing reverberation Room size (volume and surface area) Reflective properties of room surfaces Speaker orientation Decibel output

Categories of Loudspeaker Ceiling loudspeaker “Hottest” loudspeaker Indoor application Types: Power of loudspeaker: 6/3/1.5W is the most common Size of speaker:2’’ to 8’’, 5’’&6.5’’ is the most common Housing material: ABS and iron is the most common Appendix: Metal dome , ABS dome ,surface installation appendix etc.

Categories of Loudspeaker Projection loudspeaker Outstanding feature: Strong directionality in sound distribution Particularly suitable for some narrow and long space, like tunnels and corridors Type: Direction: Unidirectional and bidirectional Power of loudspeaker: 10W, 20W is the most common Housing materials: ABS and aluminum

Categories of Loudspeaker Cabinet loudspeaker Good use for playing music with subwoofer and tweeter Very common use in indoor applications such as meeting rooms, hotels etc. Type: Power of loudspeakers: 20 to 80W is very common. Housing materials: ABS for indoor, aluminum for very little outdoor use

Categories of Loudspeaker Column loudspeaker Able to play music and voice in big area Water and dust proof ability are usually required Usually used in outdoor applications Type: Power of loudspeaker: full range from 20W to 80 W, with several speakers. Housing materials: ABS, Iron & Aluminum

Categories of Loudspeaker Horn loudspeaker Able to play voice in much bigger volume than other categories, no good music performance as others Special design in speakers and struture Best choice in spacious and noisy applications, such as train stations, factories etc. Type: Power of loudspeaker: 10 W and above. Housing material: ABS and aluminum is common

Categories of Loudspeaker Pendant loudspeaker Less common used loudspeaker Wider sound distribution directions In some indoor applications without false ceiling ,it takes the place of ceiling loudspeaker

What We Want for Loudspeaker ? Beautiful appearance Cost-effective Excellent acoustic performance Robust material Easy for installation

How to choose speaker wisely? Per project architecture design for environmental match Ceiling roof ceiling speaker The room without ceiling surface mount, pendant speaker, wall mounted, indoor column speaker Outdoor places outdoor column, horn Garden/grass land weather proof garden or rock speaker Hall/conference room stylish/fashion wall mount, indoor column speaker Fire Alarm request EN54 approved speaker Per EASE Simulation SPL test STI test

Comply with international safety laws Secure and Effective European standard for VA loudspeaker European Restriction of Hazardous Substances Fire resistant - compact and high strength ABS material Anti-corrosion - pass the 24 hours salt spray test Higher sensitivity - magnet steel Y30 property, low carbon content in T-iron European access standard for electronic products Comply with international safety laws

Excellent Acoustic Performance Clear and intelligible audio performance
