Agenda Monday 15th Oct. Project overview System documentation Physics Mech. Design Tuesday 16th Oct. VR presentation (ESS site) Integration/Interfaces Operation aspects (instruments) Hazard analysis Purchasing/budget/schedule Installation Wednesday 17th Oct. Closed session/feedback

The Bunker - Overview - Tender published July ‘18 - CDR 2.0 Oct.’18 - Estimated contract signature Dec ‘18- Jan.’19 Documentation is updated Reports, Requirements, System documentation,…

The Bunker - Overview CDR 1.0 (2017) Bulk material changed from steel/HDPE laminate to heavy concrete Zoning requirements changed Seismic requirement adapted Fire safety addressed

The Bunker - Overview Bulk material changed from steel/HDPE laminate to heavy concrete The material has be changed from laminated steel-HDPE to heavy concrete Cost reduction, fire safety mitigation Zoning requirements changed The top of the bunker roof had 3[µS/h] limit, changed to 25[µS/h] Cost reduction Associated consequences of this change have been analysed (site boundary contribution, NSS budget (radiation) adapted Seismic requirement adapted Following EMT discussion (Jan. 2018), the decision has been taken to redefine the seismic requirement on the bunker. Fire safety addressed Discussions between NSS and EH&S management resulted in the conclusion: Received fire analysis of the bunker (received from WSP), is to be evaluated by NSS, and consequent action communicated to EH&S (the bunker design does not preclude sprinkler installation). Target date 15th Nov. {estimated cost ~400kEUR} Seizmics: The bunker design in ensuring compliance with GSO in H4 seismic event is to ensure that bunker system elements do not impact upon and compromise the structural integrity of the monolith shield walls of the Monolith Civil Structure (MCS) in D-building D02 in a H4 seismic event. The seismic response of the bunker structure in D02 is designed to remain standing albeit possibly deformed and the respective bunker structures in D01 and D03 deform outwards away from D02 into the respective hall and if collapse also outwards into the respective hall. Refer to ESS-0192941, Seismic analysis of D02 bunker structure.

The Bunker - Tender ESS scope Supplier’ scope: Tendering requirements Supplier’ scope: Concept design evaluation Detailed design Design validation where required (internal reinforcement, lifting features,…) Manufacture FATs Delivery to site Installation oversight SATs oversight Design life requirements Delivery schedule QC requirements Concept design Manufacturing QC oversight Interfaces definition Installation Explain better design deliverables (what is it we have defined and what is it contractor will deliver) Open book, collaborative contract

Storyboard The Bunker Manufacture Transportation On Site Activities Installation Decommissioning The bunker tender has been published in July this year, with the aim of placing the purchase order in Dec. 2018-Jan. 2019. Being a large project (by volume), the plan is to stage the production and delivery in the order of the NSS need, as dictated by the ESS integrated schedule. For example, the first parts of the steel structure are due to be delivered by the end of the next year. NBPI is under design CDR is not done yet so this storyboard is our plan during detailed design and might be subject to change as time progress Decommissioning is for inserts/plugs, not the facility

The bunker – Design status ~3 400t of heavy concrete in the roof ~4 500t of heavy concrete in the wall ~200t of construction steel ~400 roof blocks ~600 wall blocks

The bunker – Design status SUPPORT FRAME The bunker frame has to: Support the roof load; Allow easy disassembly; Ensure that blocks stacked on top, fit; Ensure repeatability of stacking/unstacking of blocks; Did not change since CDR 1.0

The bunker – Design status WALLS The bunker walls function is to: Shield (from radiation); Support (roof above); Integrate (beam feed-throughs); Changed from laminate to HC

The bunker – Design status ROOF The bunker roof is made out of blocks; The overall roof thickness changes adapting to required levels of shielding; The blocks are arranged in 3 overlapping levels up to R15m, and two overlapping levels with integrated chicanes R15-R28m; Lifting times depend on the particular point of entry; The roof thickness varies from 1,5m (west sector R6-R15) to 1m (long sectors R21-R28m)

The Bunker Overview Outlook UPDATE Mechanical Design – Conceptual design finalized Physics – Change in the bunker material composition meant a fresh (updated) battery of analyses needed to be done. All neutronics work is done, reports in review. Documentation – In approval stage Purchasing/schedule – Tender published, contract signing expected dec. ‘18 –Jan. ‘19. Budget - Current cost estimates are on budget.
