How to support innovation in services How to support innovation in services? Marianna Perogianni DG Enterprise and Industry Brussels, 04 June 2007

Innovation in services – the statistical picture (1) Percentage of firms that introduced a product or process innovation

Innovation in services – the statistical picture (2) Percentage of firms that introduced a non-technological innovation

Innovation in services – public support schemes Percentage of innovative firms that recieve public support for innovation

Innovation in services – future challenges for better public support mechanisms Innovative service companies have specific needs: One size does not fit all The key challenge is: How to promote growth or “gazelles”? Public support schemes should follow the needs of firms, not vica versa Better regulation also applies to public support schemes Therefore, The Innovation Platform for Knowledge Intensive Services is a test-bed for better and more efficient innovation policies – and a model for the future!

One size innovation policy does not fit all! R&D based innovators R&D based gazelles R&D intensity Non-R&D based innovators Non-R&D based gazelles Growth intensity
