Swbat practice the COAT strategy for writing a critical lens essay DO NOW NOTES: On your notes page, fill-in the acronym COPY DOWN THE QUOTE OWN WORDS: Put the meaning of the quote in your own words AGREE/DISAGREE: You have to state whether or not you agree or disagree with the quote and why THESIS: Tie the meaning of the quote to 2 texts stating how they are connected to one another.

In the body paragraphs… You need to connect the meaning, your interpretation of the critical lens quote, to the text. BUT You cannot just use plot summary!!!!! You will receive a 50 on the essay. The Regents rubric is clear—plot summary = 3/6 You need a vehicle a lens through which to sort out the information. Does the quote make you think of a character, a setting, a theme?

In the body paragraphs… Your first sentence (topic sentence) sets up that connection.
