Volunteering & Employment The Current Climate This week, unemployment went past two million for the first time in 12 years. In the East Midlands the total was up by 20,000 to an unemployment rate of 6.4%. In Nottingham, the unemployment rate is up to 5.5%. 10,902 city residents are now claiming the unemployment benefit. In the county, 15,946 people in Nottinghamshire are unemployed. www.volunteercentresouthderbyshire.wordpress.com

Volunteering & Employment Who Is Affected? Short-term unemployment was more likely among younger people. Long-term unemployment was more likely among older men. People with higher qualifications were likely to experience shorter lengths of unemployment. Some 34 percent of unemployed people with disabilities were long-term unemployed compared with 20 per cent for people with no disabilities.. For unemployed people with dependent children, lone parents were more likely to be long-term unemployed than heads of family in a married/cohabiting couple with dependent children (30 per cent and 26 per cent respectively). Volunteering & Employment What Is Volunteering? Volunteering is an activity which takes lots of different forms: formal or informal, individual or in groups, inside or outdoors, locally or overseas.  Volunteering is an activity which can suit every lifestyle, ability, interest and skill, while also having lots of fun in the process! The activity of volunteering, or helping a community group of your own free will, can be described by a variety of terms: community service, activism, good Samaritan, pro bono work, civic engagement - the list goes on.  Whatever term is used, all volunteering is undertaken: to benefit the community and the volunteer for no financial payment of the volunteer’s own free will in designated volunteer positions only Source: http://www.volunteeringwa.org.au/For-Volunteers/What-is-volunteering.aspx www.volunteercentresouthderbyshire.wordpress.com

Volunteering & Employment Employers’ Attitudes 81% of employers surveyed view employees who do voluntary work positively 43% of employers think that employees who undertake voluntary work and learn new skills have a better chance of promotion and earning a higher salary. 68% of employers feel that volunteering can add skills to their workforce TimeBank Employer Attitude Survey (Continental Research July 2004) Source: http://www.timebank.org.uk/mediacentre/research.php www.volunteercentresouthderbyshire.wordpress.com

Volunteering & Employment The Challenges For Referrers (Employability Professionals) The voluntary sector and volunteering can be a great place to help people move towards employment. But volunteering is not right for everybody.
