13.1 – Water in the Atmosphere How does water move through the atmosphere?

13.2 - Clouds How do clouds form? What are the three main types of clouds?

How do clouds form? Clouds form when water vapor in the air condenses to form liquid water or ice crystals. In order for water vapor to condense and form clouds, tiny particles must be present in the atmosphere so that the water has a surface on which to condense. Ex. Dust and salt.

What are the three main types of clouds? Scientists classify clouds into three main types based on their shape: cirrus, cumulus, and stratus. Clouds are further classified by their altitude. Each type of cloud is associated with a different type of weather.

Cirrus Clouds Wispy, feathery clouds form at high altitude and low temperatures. They are made of ice crystals and indicate fair weather.

Cumulus Clouds Look like cotton and form closer to the ground but extend high into the atmosphere. Short cumulus clouds usually indicate fair weather, while towering clouds often produce thunderstorms.

Stratus Clouds Form in flat layers and usually cover all or most of the sky and are a dull gray color. As these thicken, they may produce drizzle, rain, or snow.

How do these air masses move? – The Prevailing Westerlies The Prevailing Westerlies, the major wind belt over the continental U.S., generally push air masses from WEST to EAST. This is why our weather in Indiana tends to go from west to east. Jet Streams Fronts

13.5 Storms How do the different types of storms form in regards to Indiana?

Lake Effect Snow First, cool dry winter air is moving from west to east over a great lake. As it travels over the lake, the air picks up heat and moisture. When it gets to the other side of the lake (east side) the land is cooler than the lake water. The wet air chills over the cold land and drops the moisture as lake effect snow. This is why the east side of the great lakes get lake effect snow and the west sides of the lakes do not.

Tornadoes A tornado is a rapidly whirling, funnel-shaped cloud that reaches down from a thunderstorm to touch the Earth’s surface. If a tornado occurs over a lake or ocean, the storm is called a waterspout.
