Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda IB Global Politics

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda In this lesson we will consider the following key questions: How far could intervention in Rwanda in 1994 be justified on humanitarian grounds? and To what extent was humanitarian intervention effective?

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda To begin with, watch this video that provides an 8 minute summary of events leading up to and including the genocide in Rwanda in 1994. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=cgYp McbvUVA&has_verified=1

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda Attached is a link to 20 powerful photos from the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=10&v= ELAf3Yzv7-g

Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda The Shocking Immediate Aftermath Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda Rwandan Genocide: The Shocking Immediate Aftermath https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eNrHWeN0Rs

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda Now that you have seen the videos, you may find you need to process and reflect on what you have seen and heard. Take a some time to read the Rwanda Genocide Summary Outline. Make a note of any questions you may have.

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda We are now going to work in groups of 4 and try to develop our understanding of the issues surrounding genocide and the role played by the international community. Use the large poster paper and markers to map out some of the key questions that you had from both the videos and the reading. Develop answers to the key questions and you MUST provide evidence to support your answers.

Case Study - Humanitarian Intervention in Rwanda So, if for example, you say that of course humanitarian intervention was justified, you need to say why. Also, what international law that supports your view? What case studies can you find that show how the grounds for intervention have changed since the signing of the United Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)? You have 30 minutes to map out your response. Afterwards, we will come together and share our findings and attempt to reach a common understanding. Each member of the group should have a speaking part in their presentation.
