Parenthetical Citations What are they and how do I create them???

Q: What is the goal of parenthetical citations? A: To give your readers info to help them find the text you are citing. A: Should match your works cited page exactly.

What goes in a Parenthetical Citation? Begin with parenthesis ( ). Note the period comes after… Next, add in one or two words, indicating which source on your works cited you are using for that particular fact (Layton). This will be either the author’s last name or the title of the book or article, depending on which is first on your works cited page (“Taking Phones”). Are you using a book? If so, you have to indicate which page you used… (Layton 57).

For example: This year alone, 25 teens will be killed in cell- phone related driving accidents (Besthoff). Within the text… Cite any information you didn’t already know about your topic. Any facts or statistics. Any DIRECT QUOTES from your text. Nowadays, most citations are information you have paraphrased, or put into your own words.

They are especially distracted by three things: having friends in the car, the use of technology, and their general lack of experience.
