If the World Were 100 People If we could shrink the Earth’s population to a village of precisely 100 people, with all of the existing human ratios remaining the same, it would look something like this: There would be: 60 Asians 12 Europeans 9 South Americans 5 North Americans 1 Oceanian 13 Africans 73 Non-Whites 27 Whites 50 Female 50 Male 67 would be non-Christian 33 Christian 60 percent of the world’s wealth would be in the hands of 6 people 33 would live in substandard housing 16 would be unable to read 33 would suffer from malnutrition 96 would be Heterosexual 4 would be Homosexual 10 people would own a computer 1 person would be near death 1 person would be near birth 6 people would have a college education

“When one considers our world from such an incredibly compressed perspective, the need for both tolerance and understanding becomes glaringly apparent.”

Sexuality Survey What do you think caused your heterosexuality? When did you decide you were heterosexual? Could it be that your heterosexuality is just a phase? To whom have you disclosed your heterosexuality? If you have never slept with someone of your same-gender, then how do you know you wouldn’t prefer it? 4/23/2019

Sexuality Survey Is it likely that you haven’t met the right same-gender partner yet? Why do you flaunt your lifestyle with wedding rings, photos at work, and talk of your heterosexual escapades? Your heterosexuality doesn’t offend me as long as you don’t try to come on to me, but why do so many heterosexuals try to seduce others to their orientation? 4/23/2019

Sexuality Survey Considering the battering, abuse and divorce rate associated with heterosexual coupling, why would you want to enter into that kind of relationship? Why do heterosexuals place so much emphasis on sex? Like Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird, as teachers we need to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes to see what the world looks like in order to gain insight and make our classroom’s a safe place to learn… for all students. 4/23/2019

The 911 on GLBTQ 101 GLBTQ is shorthand for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Creating the hate-free zone Brainstorm: What does “hate-free” mean? So, what’s acceptable, what’s not? 4/23/2019

Making Your Class a Safe Zone What Does the Ed Code Say? AB 537 (The California Student Safety and Violence Protection Act of 2000) Protects students, faculty, and staff at public schools and non-religious schools receiving funding from harassment and discrimination on the public basis of actual or perceived sexual orientation and gender identity. So, what does this mean for your classroom? 4/23/2019

Time to Do Some Homwork! CATE 2009 Presenter: Brian Jeffrey Time to Do Some Homwork! "HOMWORK": WAYS TO FIGHT HOMOPHOBIA AS AN ALLY Interrupt anti-GLBTQ jokes, comments or any other behaviors that make homophobia appear acceptable. Always use neutral labels like "significant other" or "partner" instead of just "boyfriend" or "girlfriend" when talking with students or writing in class Bring up GLBTQ issues when talking with colleagues or students. Put GLBTQ-positive posters in the halls and classrooms or wear shirts or buttons that promote tolerance. 4/23/2019 Website: mrjeffrey.com E-Mail: mrj@mrjeffrey.com 10

Continuing Your Homwork! CATE 2009 Continuing Your Homwork! Presenter: Brian Jeffrey "HOMWORK": WAYS TO FIGHT HOMOPHOBIA AS AN ALLY Don't make assumptions about peoples' sexual orientations or gender identities. Assume there are GLBTQ people in all classes, sports, meetings, daily life, etc. Don't assume that "feminine-acting men" and "masculine-acting women" are not heterosexual. Don't assume that "macho males" or "feminine females" are heterosexual. 4/23/2019 Website: mrjeffrey.com E-Mail: mrj@mrjeffrey.com
